Channel 4 | Random Acts | Lioness
Random Acts is a brand new short-form daily arts strand on Channel 4. We were commissioned to make 10 x 3 minute films, all chosen for their bold and original expressions of creativity.
Television as art, rather than about art, Random Acts will enable a diverse supply of both established artists and emerging talent to create their own pieces, unmediated by presenters and unfettered by the conventions of conservative arts television.
James: “Ch4 wanted more people from the rap world and Lioness is a very talented MC and rapper. This was in the same location as Mikill Pane and again it’s acapella.
It’s quite deep, she’s a very talented MC and rapper, and the story talks about getting pregnant. There are clichés we try to avoid when we’re filming that kind of music. No graffiti walls for a start.”
Phil: “You just listen to the lyrics and think about what they’re rapping about. People assume rappers only talk about guns and bitches and that’s not the case.
We don’t want to go down that lazy shorthand for “urban”, whatever that means, it’s about context and imagination and how you present things.
